This is obviously a very, very happy frog. Not all amphibians smile so broadly for the camera, but this guy was a real ham. It is an Argentine horned frog (also called a Pacman frog), and it’s one of the species we have in my semi-annual Frog and Reptile workshop held in Kansas City. Even though all the photography takes place indoors in a hotel conference room, we make the environment look as natural as possible. I tried an experiment with this picture. Instead of using my Canon R5, a 50mm macro and a ring flash, I used my iPhone to ascertain whether I liked the lighting, the sharpness, the depth of field, and the color. The illumination for this picture were the fluorescent lights in the room plus some window lighting. I have to say I was extremely impressed with how my iPhone 13 handled every aspect of this picture. The iPhone 15, supposed to be released soon, is supposed to have a 48 megapixel camera. That’s 3 more megapixels than the R5! The next Frog workshop is Aug. 19-20, next month.
