It would be very easy to be lazy with respect to attention to detail in maintaining sharp focus on this orangutan in the Indonesian portion of Borneo. Specifically, had I shot this with a large lens aperture with a low ISO in mind, the foreground hair would be soft. Yes, the eyes have to be sharp, but had the foreward arm been out of focus, this picture would have been a failure in my opinion. That's why I used f/16, and in the dim light of a thick overcast, that's why the ISO was 5000. The shutter speed was 1/250 and my focal length 350mm on a 100-400mm lens. I shot this from a slowly moving boat.
