On my last trip to Brazil’s Pantanal region, my photo tour group was lucky to see and photograph an ocelot that had been hanging around our lodge. The small jungle cat would show itself around sunset, and in the dense vegetation that meant the light level was quite low. Still, it was worth the effort to position ourselves in the hope of a sighting. The personnel at the lodge set up a blind for photographers, and we got settled into position about 45 minutes before we expected any action. As it was getting close to dark, the ocelot appeared and eat the pieces of raw chicken left for him. My settings were 1/250, f/5.6, and 2500 ISO. I took this shot with a 100-400mm Canon zoom. The only thing I did to this image in post-processing was to lighten the eyes slightly to make them more luminous.
