Wildebeests are not easy to photograph simply because they are, well, sort of ugly. I've taken lots of head shots and group shots of them and I don't really like any of the pictures. Great subjects make great pictures . . . and these guys are not what I call great subjects. The best pictures I've taken of them are at sunrise when individuals and groups of the animals were in silhouette against an orange sky. I included the sun for drama, and the reason why it's so large in the frame is because I used a telephoto lens. The longer the lens, the larger the sun appears. I took this shot with a 400mm focal length, and because it was important to me to have the sun sharply defined, I stopped the lens down to f/20. That is easy to do when shooting a bright sun because there is so much light that you can use a fairly low ISO, a fairly fast shutter, plus have the extensive depth of field. Because many of the animals in the herd were running and I didn't want to take a chance at blurring the movement, I used 1/4000 and 1600 ISO.
