I took this picture of a massive colony of cape gannets at Lambert's Bay in South Africa. I was able to walk right up to the edge of the colony and shoot with a wide angle lens. This was taken in the days of film, and it's completely unmanipulated. The reason the sky is so bluish is because daylight film (Fujichrome Provia 100) captured deep shade and overcast with blue tones -- just like if you use a daylight white balance today with a digital camera and shoot in similar lighting conditions. One of the reasons I like this picture so much is because wide angle lenses are rarely used for bird photography, and that makes this picture relatively unique. Wide angle lenses never capture what we see; instead, they exaggerate perspective and make the foreground disproportionately large compared to the background. This artistic interpretation of a scene helps us create drama and visual impact.

Jim - Hi Linda,
Yes, I just found out there was a problem because a couple of recipients of my blogs told me. Actually, a month or so ago, someone wrote me about this issue but I thought the problem was on their end. Then I discovered it was on my end. The software that sent you the daily blog info, Feedburner, is owned by Google and they stopped supporting it. Hence, the problem. So, after two hours on the phone with tech support from two different web companies, you are now getting notified of my blogs again. As you may recognize, the notice you’re getting is different than before. It’s more work for me to do it this way, but there are no other options.
Thanks for your note about this.
Jim
