I'm not a big fan of blurred images, but sometimes long shutter speeds with moving subjects do produce compelling images. Usually, bright and colorful subjects make the best blurs as exemplified by the motion-blur bicycle race I photographed in Tennessee. I panned with the bikes as they sped past me, and my settings were 1/6, f/32, 100 ISO and I used a 50mm lens. In choosing a shutter speed, you have to decide how much definition you want in the subjects and how abstract the picture will be. It usually takes me two or three shots to decide on the shutter as I experiment with different settings because it's impossible to visualize the final results until the images appear on the LCD monitor. The beautiful lighting came from a low angled sun at sunrise.
