Because the Brazilian carnival parade moves past you, compositions and angles change constantly. You have to think fast and shoot a lot. Like with all moving subjects -- fast or slow -- taking the time to thoughtfully compose a shot isn't an option. I grabbed a lot of pictures that didn't turn out to be good images simply because I was shooting so fast. Here is one example that I really like. A few seconds before and after this was taken and the juxtaposition of the two dancers was different. I especially like the smoke in the background and the fact that you can see a portion of the incredible design of the float. I used a 100-400mm Canon zoom for this, and the settings were 1/400, f/5.6, 1600 ISO. Again, no flash was used. Instead, I used post-processing tools in Adobe Camera Raw to mitigate unwanted contrast and to make the exposure perfect in a very tricky lighting situation.

Jim - Thanks very much, Bill. I really enjoyed taking them. Here is a direct link to more images from Brazil on my website: http://www.jimzuckerman.com/brazil
I've only posted about 20 so far -- more to come. I just arrived in Nepal and haven't had much time to put up the majority of the images.
