This is a well-known stand of cypress trees in the middle of a farm field that can be seen from the road here in Tuscany, and photographers love to photograph it because of the attractive graphic design. At sunset, my photo tour group and I were very lucky to capture this lenticular cloud formation right above the trees. This type of cloud formation typically happens above mountains, so it was actually very unusual to see this in Tuscany. When it first formed, I was shooting from a position where the cloud was off to the left. I quickly ran to a spot where this flying saucer-like cloud could be captured directly above the trees. I composed the image such that the cypress trees were in the center of the frame to underscore the symmetry and balance of the scene. In post-processing, I added clarity first in ACR, and when that wasn’t enough to make the sky really pop I added Pro Contrast and Tonal Contrast in Nik Color Efex 4. I also felt the sky was originally too cyan, so I added a touch of blue to it using the 'hue' slider in the hue/saturation dialog box. My settings were 1/100, f/16, 640 ISO, and I used the Canon 100-400mm lens set to 135mm.

Jim - Thanks very much, Vera. God bless you as well.
Thank you, Barbara. No, I don't know what's grown there. Here in Tuscany it's mostly grapes and olives, but this field has something else. I'm not sure what.

Barbara Vickers - Jim - I laughed with delight when I saw this picture. I too have never seen a lenticular
cloud in person but I am still looking. Such a great photo! Any idea what is grown in
that field?

Vera - Jim I have never seen Lenticular Clouds only in photographs. I love this composition, the circular lines under the Pine trees makes this image in perfect harmony. Thank you. God Bless you.

Jim - Thanks very much, Bill. They are just a mile or so west of San Quirico d'Orcia just off the highway. You can see them from the road.
