When I was in Japan last time for a winter tour, my group was photographing stellar eagles and black kites when a red fox unabashedly trotted right past us and then sat down to eat a fish it had caught. My local guide loaned me he his Sigma 800mm f/5.6 telephoto -- I toyed with the idea of buying this monster lens that weighs 10.45 pounds -- and in conjunction with the Sigma I added a 1.4x teleconverter giving me 1120mm of focal length. I used a tripod to deal with the weight, and my settings were 1/1250, f/18, and 1600 ISO. It's great having such magnification, especially for birds and wildlife, but managing such heavy equipment takes the fun out of photography. Plus, I find that a single focal length is compositionally limiting.
