I photographed puffins today, and on the way back from the colony of birds one of the men in my photo tour group spotted this beautiful red fox just sitting and watching our van go by. I stopped and we slowly got out to take some pictures. He hung around, watching us but keeping a safe distance. The sunset lighting was exquisite, and it was one of those instances when all the elements came together perfectly. I used a Canon 500mm f/4 telephoto along with a 1.4x teleconverter, giving me 700mm of focal length, and the settings were 1l250, f/11, 320 ISO. I should have used a faster shutter speed but I was shooting quickly, daring not to change my camera settings for fear the fox would turn away and disappear over the hill behind him. It turned out that the pictures are all sharp even though I hand held the large (and very heavy) lens plus the heavy Canon 1Dx Mark II.
