When I composite images, I usually chose pictures taken with the same (or very similar) focal lengths. Combining a wide angle shot with one taken with a telephoto typically produces a picture that doesn’t look right. However, in this instance, I departed from what is normally correct because I thought this combination of shots worked well. I photographed the northern gannet in flight here in Newfoundland with a 100-400mm telephoto, and I combined it with a 24mm landscape showing the gannet colony in the distance. In doing this, I could give a sense of the environment, show the density of birds in the colony, and at the same time capture the grace and beauty of one of the birds in flight. To select the bird in Photoshop, I used the quick selection tool, and then I simply pasted the bird into the landscape and sized it (with Edit > transform > scale) according to my taste.
