In the middle 90's I sold a lot of pictures to Omni, a magazine famous for its covers and avant-garde imagery. They liked all the special effects I was doing at the time. One day the editor called me and said they needed a picture that represents God. Wow, I thought, what can I possibly do for that? It seemed like an impossible request. So, I was thinking about this as I was driving along on a street in Los Angeles, and at a stop light a van pulled up next to me with a banner, "Ice Carving by Jacques." I thought, that's it! An ice carving. So I called Jacques and asked him if he could carve a head and face for me, and he did. I went to his ice studio and photographed his creation, and after some Photoshop work to make the face more chiseled and symmetrical (I mirrored the face), this is what I came up with. The cloud panels were created in a 3D program before Photoshop had 3D ability. I used the program Strata Vision, and I 'texture mapped' the clouds onto the panels. The background -- also mirrored -- is what I created when I passed an electric charge through a 4 x 5 inch piece of color transparency film (there's no end to the weird things I think of!). The film was developed in the darkroom normally. Omni bought the picture, and I was gratified that I came up with a solution to a seemingly impossible request.

Jim - That's very kind, Rosemary. And yes, I didn't forget God who made that serendipitous moment.

Rosemary Sheel - I agree with Bonnie. You are a genius, but let's not forget God who had you drive by an ice-sculptor's shop!

Jim - Thanks, Linda. Here is a link to some of my published work over the years, and the first two covers are from Omni:

Linda - WOW!! Love this image and the effects. Also loved Omni magazine, wish it was still in publication. Fun to know you were part of making their covers - they were indeed avantgarde.
