The legrowers of Inle Lake are so-called because they row their boats standing on one leg and manipulate the paddle with the other one. It is quite difficult to master, but they make it look easy. They are a favorite subject to photograph in this part of Burma, and they make dynamic graphic subjects at sunset.
To get this unique perspective through one of their fishing nets, I asked my local guide to hire two of these fishermen. I couldn’t get into their wooden boats because they are so unstable (they are like a very narrow canoe), so I had one of the men move his boat such that its bow actually came over the boat I was in. Our two boats were perpendicular to each other. In this way, I could use a 24mm lens for this dynamic shot and make it look like I was actually in his boat. After each person in my group got the shot, the fisherman paddled away from us so we could get other types of silhouettes
I used f/18 to make sure the net, the fishing boats, and the distant landscape were all sharp. My shutter speed was 1/160th of a second, and I used 400 ISO.
