I photographed this Pao girl in the Shan State of Burma, and as usual I asked her to move into the shade out of direct sunlight. This minimized contrast, and her eyes could remain large without squinting from a bright sun. My photo tour group enjoyed this wonderful portrait opportunity, but in the original capture the colors in her headpiece consisted mostly of supersaturated shades of red. I felt that those colors were so intense that it took attention away from her lovely face, so I selected the headpiece using the quick selection tool in Photoshop and then chose the pulldown menu command, Image > adjustments > hue/saturation. In that dialog box, I pulled down the submenu (that shows the word master) and chose 'red'. I then moved the saturation slider to the left, and this action desaturated only the red color in the headpiece.
At first, I desaturated the entire photo. This created a problem because the red color in the girl's skin and lips was also desaturated, and that didn't work. To do this correctly, only the fabric in the headpiece had to be toned down in color.
My camera settings for this picture were 1/320th of a second, f/4, 400 ISO. I shot this with a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens set to 200mm.
