This is a scissor-tailed flycatcher from south Texas, and I was only able to capture it because after diving into a small pond, it returned to the same perch in the tall grass several times. They are so fast that it's not a question of can the autofocus keep up; rather, can you simply keep it in the frame as it flies. I prefocused on its perch and, at 20 fps, I was able to capture 2 or 3 images as it landed and took flight. While it was in flight, there was simply no way to photograph it. My settings were 1/3200, f/10, and 1000 ISO, and I used the 500mm focal on my Canon zoom plus a 1.4x teleconverter giving me 700mm of focal length. The bright light helped me keep the ISO to a reasonable value.
