This stump is one of the natural props I used during the Texas birds workshop to bring the various species to within telephoto range. Several types of seeds and nuts, plus suet, were placed strategically to be out of view, and the birds came repeatedly to feed. Sometimes, as in this instance, there was a bit of a confrontation. Here two male cardinals were vying for the same perch. One of the great things about photography, especially with our modern digital cameras, is it can show us brief moments in the natural world that we could never see with our eyes. I took this shot using a frame rate of 20 fps, and my settings were 1/4000, f/9, and 2500 ISO.
