One of the portrait techniques I like to use is to shoot with a wide angle lens standing above the person and angling the camera downward. This creates a type of distortion, but this isn’t necessarily bad. It offers a different kind of perspective, and it creates a unique sense of place. Our eyes never see this kind of look, but that’s where photographic artistry comes into play. For this shot, I used the Canon 16-35mm III at the widest focal length as I stood just 4 or 5 feet from Jeanne, the French model who so kindly made her costume in green as I had requested the previous year. The location is a 16th century palace I use for my annual photo workshop in Venice, Italy every February. My settings were 1/100, f/5, 1600 ISO, and the diffused light came from a large bank of windows to my right at the far end of the cavernous room.
