This is a simple photograph of a simple subject -- a barrel at the corner of an old house -- but what makes this more than a documentary image is the use of a wide angle lens placed close to the foreground. I used a 14mm lens for the extreme exaggeration of perspective, and the camera and lens were about three feet from the barrel. I used f/22 for maximum depth of field. Even though wide angle lenses inherently have extensive depth of field, when the camera-to-subject distance is so minimal, DOF is reduced. Therefore, in order to regain the focus throughout the image, a small aperture is necessary. I used a tripod because with such a small aperture, the shutter was going to be too slow to hand hold the camera.
