I took this picture of a rainbow boa at my recent frog and reptile workshop in St. Louis. You can see why I tell my participants that depth of field is essential with subjects like this -- because there is so much fascinating detail in small animals. To focus just on the eye, for example, may be considered 'artsy' by some, but to me there is no point in rendering such a great subject mostly out of focus. We want to see and appreciate all of the remarkable coloration, texture, and design in an animal like this, not be frustrated that we can't really see the subject due to shallow depth of field. I used f/32 for this shot, which was the most DOF I could get. The lighting came from a ring flash, and I did a little cloning to eliminate some of the reflection from the flash on the snake's nose and eye. The lens I used here was a 50mm macro. The next frog and reptile workshop is May 21, 22. We have over 40 amazing creatures to photograph. Everyone gets amazing pictures!
