We had an overcast and rainy day today in Inner Mongolia, northern China, but for 10 minutes just after sunrise we had a bit of sun. We took advantage of that beautiful lighting by capturing Mongol herders running their horses through the shallow end of a small lake right in front of the sun. I zoomed back to include the reflection in the water. There were a few other photo groups shooting the scene, and most of the other photographers used a tripod. I didn't. It didn't make sense to me that if I were using a fast shutter to freeze the action, why would a tripod be necessary? I preferred the freedom of movement by hand holding the camera so I could follow the horses and adjust the composition easily. My settings for this shot were: Manual exposure mode, 1/1250, f/9, auto ISO that ended up being 3200, daylight white balance, and a cluster of 9 focus points for the AF. I used my 100-400mm zoom attached to a 1.4x teleconverter.
