I’m in Inner Mongolia now with my photo tour group. This is a province of China about 200 miles north of Beijing. Ethnic Mongols ran a herd of about 50 horses for us today, and we photographed them from a hill overlooking a flat and dusty valley. The main event -- the running of 300 horses -- happens the day after tomorrow, and that’s why we’re here. This was a warm up shoot to practice technique, camera settings, and to anticipate what’s coming. From the elevated perspective, I used a telephoto zoom lens, and as the herd got closer I kept changing the focal length, trying to fill the frame with the most horses. I set the 1Dx Mark II on manual exposure mode, and the shutter speed I chose was 1/1250th of a second to freeze the action. I shot at f/9 and auto ISO. My 100-400mm Canon zoom plus a 1.4x teleconverter gave me 140 - 560mm of zoom range, and for all of my outdoor shooting I choose daylight white balance. The AF was set to AI servo (continuous focusing) with 9 central focus points selected.

Lorraine Piskin - Hi Jim:
Did you switch cameras during the "one" run? I'm wondering how you could've used two cameras at the same time ... unless they ran two times.
Also, Why did you use the 1DX Mark II..,
Sounds like it is the place to go. I'd love to see that event!!!
