I captured this silhouette in Kenya several years ago. I hand held a Canon 500mm f/4 telephoto and rested my elbow on the top of the Land Rover while shooting through a roof hatch. When using long lenses for wildlife, I'd rather use a fast shutter speed than image stabilization to guarantee sharp pictures. Because long lenses magnify movement so much, fast shutters are essential. When using IS (or VR), there can be a slight delay when depressing the shutter button while the stabilization kicks into action. Those few milliseconds can mean the difference between getting the shot and missing it which is why I opt for a fast speed if there is enough light. For the exposure, I let the large, brilliant sun force the meter into underexposure, thereby producing a silhouette. My settings were 1/2500, f/13, and 200 ISO.
