This is a male agama rock lizard I captured in Namibia. I wanted to fill the frame with this medium-sized lizard, but it didn't allow a close enough approach that I'd need for a 200mm lens. So, I used a Canon 500mm f/4 telephoto in conjunction with one extension tube. The minimum focusing distance with the older version of this lens is 14.8 feet (4.5 meters), and I needed to get a little closer than that. The extension tube reduced the minimum focusing distance to around 8 or 9 feet and allowed me to get the composition I wanted. My settings were 1/400, f/5.0, and 200 ISO. With this kind of shallow depth of field, the only way I could get the reptile in focus from head to tail (notwithstanding the focus fall off on the right rear leg) was if the body was parallel to the plane of the digital sensor. Therefore, I made sure I took this from a 90 degree angle as opposed to shooting obliquely.
