Here is another picture of a jaguar in the river. To search for these cats, we would typically cruise 20 to 25 miles a day up and down the serpentine waterways of the Pantanal. Sometimes our boat would see the jaguar first, and other times we'd get a call that another boat had found one. We would then take off at about 40 miles an hour (which seems like warp speed on water) to the location and hopefully get a good shot. The picture I've attached here was taken in a narrow channel of the river -- so narrow, in fact, that I had to switch to my 100-400mm lens. This photo was actually taken with a 214mm focal length -- that's how close we were to the cat. My settings for this were 1/320, f/9, and 2000 ISO. With the new Canon 1Dx Mark II, I feel much more comfortable using higher ISO settings because the noise is minimal, and that translates into sharper pictures because in dark circumstances I can use faster shutter speeds.

Jim - Hi Bryan, Yes, f/9 on another lens (assuming the same focal length) would give the same results in terms of depth of field.

Bryan - Jim,
Nice shots these last few days.
I know it is desirable have a pro, low-numbered-f-stop lens in cases where you need to shoot more wide open, but in a case like this where you set to F9 for other reasons, would a cheaper lens with a minimum f-stop of say F4 give the same results when set at F9?
