This is a toque macaque, a monkey species native to Sri Lanka. They live near centers of human population because of habitat loss, and they allow a fairly close approach. I took this portrait with my 100-400mm lens along with a 1.4x teleconverter giving me 560mm of reach. For this shot, the actual focal length was 437mm. I paid special attention to the background, making sure I photographed the macaque against out of focus foliage rather than the bright sky. A light background would have been very distracting, and with all of the ultra fine hair and whiskers, I didn't think I could replace the background and make it look real. I used enough depth of field so both eyes were sharp -- that was really important in my opinion. My settings were 1/500, f/8, and 1250 ISO.
