On one of my photo tours to Kenya a few years ago, my group saw 10 different lion pairs mating. Love was definitely in the air! I captured this amorous couple with a Canon 500mm f/4 telephoto resting on a bean bag that was placed on the windowsill of the vehicle. Even though a bean bag isn't a tripod, I still turn the image stabilization off to make sure the movement of the inner gyro doesn't cause blur. Also, with fast shutter speeds, stabilization is superfluous and it drains the battery. Today, this is especially important to note when using mirrorless cameras because the consumption of power is significant. My settings were 1/1000, f/8, and 200 ISO. With wildlife, I prefer to err on the side of speed when it comes to the choice of the shutter to insure tack sharp images.
