In the early 19th century, there was a movement in the U.S. to reform prisons and to create state run hospitals for the mentally ill. In response to this, the Georgia legislature in 1837 passed a bill to establish the "State Lunatic, Idiot, and Epileptic Asylum." Really. I'm not making that up. Today the abandoned buildings that comprised this facility are in ruins, and I include them in my Abandoned in Georgia photo tour. I seldom do black and white, but many of the places on this tour look great in this medium. For this images, I added a lot of clarity and contrast in post-processing, and then I manipulated the tones with the pulldown menu command in Photoshop: Image > adjustments > black and white. The bold contrast seems to underscore the haunting nature of these ruins. My settings were 1/500, f/13, 1250 ISO, and I used a 16mm focal length for the shot.
