I photographed this expressive chimpanzee in Kenya. We were separated by a body of water, and that gave me a safety buffer since I was on the ground and not in a vehicle. I was using a tripod and shooting with a 500mm plus a 1.4x teleconverter, giving me 700mm of focal length. Whenever I used a tripod or even a bean bag, I always turn off the image stabilization feature. With most lenses, using the IS (or VR) along with a stable platform means the pictures won't be sharp. In addition, you simply don't need it. It slows the camera down slightly and it drains the battery quicker, and this is especially important with mirrorless cameras. My settings were 1/60, f/5.6, and 400 ISO.
