Autumn in Patagonia is really beautiful. In April (the seasons are reversed from the Northern Hemisphere), the southern beech trees turn brilliant red, and in contrast with the land the pictures are stunning. This is a small waterfall near the hotel I use in El Chalten, Argentina. It seems counterintuitive, but autumn colors are best photographed in diffused light. Contrast is minimal, and that makes the colors stand out brilliantly -- more so than in direct sunlight. I took this shot with a 16-35mm wide angle lens, and my settings were 1/4 second, f/18, and 100 ISO. The rocky ground was quite treacherous, and I had to watch my footing carefully. I used my tripod as a walking stick as I navigated to the various shooting locations.
