This is a male and female emerald toucanet engaged in foreplay, so to speak, before mating. Toucanets have a wide range environments they inhabit, from humid forests at sea level to 10,000 foot mountain habitats. The background in this image is really busy, and I could have replaced it with, for example, blurred foliage. But in the end, this is their environment so I felt it's appropriate. I have a lot of clean portrait shots of these birds with non-distracting backgrounds, but I was exciting to capture this behavior. I used a 100-500mm Canon telephoto for the shot, and the settings were 1/1600, f/7.1, and 8000 ISO. I processed the image with DXO to mitigate the noise and then made the final exposure and contrast adjustments in ACR.
