This is a baby Caiman I photographed on one of my photo tours to the Pantanal in Brazil. It is the South American relative of the alligator. Even though it is obviously very low to the ground, I was able to get this eye-level composition because it was on a river bank approximately level with our boat. The lighting was amazing. The low-angled morning sun grazed the side of the head and the eye producing pronounced texture and golden tones. The depth of field was extremely shallow because I used a 500mm f/4 Canon lens plus a 1.4x teleconverter, giving me 700mm of focal length. I shot this wide open due to the low light, and with the teleconverter this equated to f/5.6. My shutter speed was 1/1000, and the ISO was 1250. Tripods are pointless in boats, so I hand held the camera and lens.
