I captured this koala in Australia. The backlight on those humorous ears makes the shot in my opinion. In post-processing, I lightened the shadows and muted the highlights to obtain a good balance between the two. My settings were 1/200, f/3.5, and 400 ISO. I took this in 2005 with my first digital camera (Canon 1Ds Mark II) which had a noise problem, thus my ISO of 400. That, in turn, forced a large lens aperture. I would have preferred more depth of field so the front legs were sharp, but it was a choice between too much noise or more DOF. Today, I would have taken this at 1/320 and f/11 or f/16 and eliminated any noise using Topaz DeNoise or Neat Image.
