I photographed this elderly lady in Bali, Indonesia. She was selling sarongs, and as you can see she carried her inventory on her head. My wife bought a couple of them with the understanding we could photograph her. I used a 105mm focal length on a 24-105mm lens, and my settings were 1/80, f/9, and 500 ISO. The sun was shining brightly, so I asked her if would move into the shade of an ancient stone wall to take advantage of soft and diffused light. This prevented her from squinting, and it also avoided harsh, contrasty light that makes portraits so unattractive. You can never go wrong with photographing people in the shade as long as the background is also shaded.
