My Bats and Birds workshop is coming up in September, and I thought I'd post this shot from a previous encounter. The procedure used to capture bats in flight at night is fascinating. An electronic beam is set up across an artificial pond, and the camera is mounted on a tripod and focused on the beam. Two flash units are positioned on either side of the pond. An infrared light is placed to flood the area with light invisible to the human eye. A video camera sensitive to IR is tethered to a black and white TV, and it is here where I could see the bats when they arrived. As soon as I saw movement on the TV, I opened the shutter of the camera. When a bat broke the beam, the flash units fired. I had a cancellation in the September workshop, and if you might be interested in joining me, send me a note. It's an amazing experience and you'll take great shots. This is a little brown bat from Arizona.
