This is a 14th century stepwell in Delhi. It is designed to catch rain water during the monsoon season so people have water during the long dry period. Stone steps allow women to walk down to the water's surface no matter how full the well is. It is quite the architectural feat since it goes quite deep into the ground. I converted the original color shot to black and white and used the Photoshop pulldown menu command "Image > adjustments > black and white" to adjust the contrast. I then added the model, sized her correctly with "Edit > transform > scale," and added a bit of a shadow under her shoes with the burn tool. Every thing and everyone makes a shadow, however subtle, even when the ambient light is soft and diffused. My settings were 1/400, f/16, and 1000 ISO. I used a small lens aperture to guarantee complete depth of field. In a shot like this, everything has to be tack sharp.
