I've seen more black-backed jackals this time in Kenya than I've ever seen in the past. Many of them had pups, and my group and I really wanted to get close up pictures of them. After visiting several den sites, we finally found one in which the three-week old jackal puppies were active and daring to explore the outside world. They would stick their heads out of a hole, see us, and then duck back in. We had to be quick to capture the cute little faces. My settings for this were 1/640, f/9, 800 ISO, and I used the new 100-400mm Canon zoom.
