On my last photo tour to South Africa at Sabi Sabi, my group and I had the incredible good fortunate of coming upon a blue eyed elephant. Our guide explained that there are only three known African elephants in the world that have eyes like this -- the other two are in Kenya. The elephant is about four years old. The better shot I took is head-on, but unfortunately it's not tack sharp because I had been shooting landscapes from our safari vehicle and I hadn't switched to the higher ISO and faster shutter required for animals. I've attached that photo also, but it's disappointing. The head-on shot required a certain amount of depth of field, too, because the trunk was a few feet closer to me than the eyes and I using a 400mm focal length, thus making DOF quite shallow. The side view is not a great shot as elephant photography goes, but it's such a rare animal that I wanted to share it. My camera settings for this were 1/60, f/5.6, 400 ISO.

Alyssa - Thank you for sharing! Netflix has a series called our Planet and I think they filmed one with blue eyes in the 3rd episode :)

Ang - I can't seem to find in a Google search or other whether or not baby elephants have blue eyes when they're born
turn color as they get older and if so, what age? Do you know of this?
