This is another ancient stepwell in India. You can see the remarkable step-system that allows women to collect rain water no matter how high or low the water surface is. Usually, photographers avoid midday sunlight because the contrast is extreme and the lighting is harsh and, therefore, unattractive. However, in this case, the overhead sun worked in my favor because of the way it illuminated the steps. The graphic nature of the architecture was poignantly underscored. Using the highlights and the shadows sliders in Adobe Camera Raw (you can use the same tools in Lightroom), I adjusted the exposure and the contrast to show detail through out the composition. My settings were 1/160, f/11, and 200 ISO, and I used a Canon 24-105mm lens for this shot. Regarding this lens, you may have noticed I have used it for most of the pictures from India. It is a fabulous zoom range. Nikon’s equivalent is a 24-120mm lens, which is also great. In my opinion, the 24-70mm that so many photographers use is simply too limited in its focal length range.
