This picture shows the bottom of a 16th century stepwell in Jaipur, India. It was designed to catch rain water during the monsoon season. Levels of steps allow women to walk down to the water's surface and fill their ceramic pots. This system isn't used now, so I arranged to have these models pose for my group. The water here is about 40 feet below ground level. I climbed down the steps as well to get an eye-level shot, and my settings were 1/160, f/9 and 640 ISO. Note the diffused light. The sun was low in the sky so the entire stepwell was shaded. Even though we all know sunrise and sunset lighting is beautiful, you can never go wrong with diffused lighting for any kind of subject matter.
