Usually I would consider this background distracting to a subject, but in this case I purposely included it because it’s a traditional Mongolian motif. I photographed this little girl in a ger, a round, white tent that nomadic peoples in Central Asia use as their homes. It was decorated with colorful fabrics showing bold graphic designs, and therefore it seemed to me to be appropriate. The ethnicity of my young model is Khazak, and it took some coaxing to get her to pose. I’m sure I seemed like an alien to her because she sees very little of the outside world.
My settings for this picture were 1/125 at f/4 with 1600 ISO. The diffused light filtering in through the doorway lit the young girl beautifully. I wouldn’t have wanted any other type of lighting.
