When doing macro with a ring flash, the eyes of the subjects will always reflect the two curved portions of the ring light. This obviously ruins the shot. The problem, though, is that there is no way to avoid it. Therefore, this reflection must be cloned out as I did here using the clone tool in Photoshop. I took this picture during my frog and reptile workshop with a 50mm macro lens and two extension tubes to allow extreme magnification. This is the eye of a tokay gecko, which is native to Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries. I used f/32, 200 ISO, and the shutter speed was the sync speed with the flash -- 1/200th of a second. I hand held the camera.

Jim - Hi Ginette, Most animals and insects can handle flash with no problem. With this tokay gecko, I was about 3 inches away from the eye and it didn't seem to react at all to the ring flash.
