You can never go wrong with a dark background. It directs all of the attention where you want it -- on the subject. At the same time, there are no distracting elements that might draw the eye away from where we should be concentrating. If the background is not as dark as you want, you can use the burn tool in Photoshop or the adjustment brush in ACR or Lightroom to make it darker. I photographed my great Pyrenees, Princey, in my backyard yesterday against a Leyland cypress tree and then made it somewhat darker with the burn tool. For this picture I used the new Canon 100-400mm lens on my 5D Mark III body. At 155 pounds, this dog weights 57 pounds more than my wife!
