This is a one day old baby baboon I photographed in Kenya. The mother and baby were sitting on the ground only 10 feet from my vehicle, and at first I composed the shot with a 70-200mm medium telephoto. The problem that immediately annoyed me was this lens included too much dirt. I switched to a Canon 500mm f/4 telephoto for a tighter shot, but the problem with using this lens was the minimum focusing distance is about 14 feet -- in other words, I couldn't focus on the animals at this close range. I quickly inserted one extension tube between the camera body and the lens, and this allowed me to focus. I lost focus to infinity, but for the moment that was fine. My settings were 1/320, f/4.5, and 200 ISO.
