One of the things I like to do when creating painterly images is combine techniques. As more techniques are combined, the original photograph becomes more and more like a painting that appears to have nothing to do with photography. This portrait is an example. The model's face was completely covered with copper-colored eye shadow, and a silvery piece of fabric was used as a head piece. I then applied Filter > distort > polar coordinates to the background only, and then used Filter > stylize > extrude to abstract the background further. Next, I used two different filters within the Photoshop plugin Topaz Impression and created two separate images: with Da Vinci Sketch 1 and with Photo Painting 1. I then combined both of those images using the 'overlay' blend mode in the Layers palette.
