Most of my writings on photography are oriented to fine art imagery. I love the artistic approach where composition, lighting, backgrounds, etc. are all perfect. Sometimes, though, artistic considerations are less important than other factors, such as humor. In this very cute picture of a lioness in Kenya, the stick near her head isn’t ideal and the light background, akin to an overexposed sky (it’s the surface of water reflecting the sky) is distracting as is the very pronounced diagonal line of the shore. Still, I like the picture a lot. The bent paws remind me of a kitten or puppy, and I thought to see such a ferocious predator in a vulnerable and adorable pose was worth having a photograph that is less than artistically perfect. My settings for this shot were 1/400, f/5.0, 200 ISO, and I used a 500mm f/4 Canon lens.
