In remembrance of D-day -- this is the 76th anniversary of the invasion of France by the allies in World War II -- I'm posting an image I took at the American Cemetery at Omaha Beach last year in Normandy. I added a lot of clarity in Adobe Camera Raw for increased contrast and drama. There are three places in the world I've visited that, to me, are profoundly moving and emotionally devastating. This American Cemetery in France is one of them. The other two are Auschwitz/Birkenau concentration camps in Poland and the infamous high school turned prison in Phnom Penh, Cambodia where an estimated 20,000 men, women, and children were tortured to death by the Khmer Rouge -- and this was just one of 150 torture centers in the country during the Communist reign of terror in the late 70's. In these places, it's hard for me to take pictures. I have to force myself, actually. My settings for this image were 1/400, f/16, and 400 ISO. I used a 400mm focal length to compress the headstones.
