Strong graphic design is a key ingredient in successful images; that's why I love photographing in Namibia. The huge, orange dunes are incredibly graphic as are the remains of ancient trees at a placed called Deadvlei. I visit this area every time I lead a photography tour to this country, and it's truly difficult to take a bad picture here. To get this shot, I climbed about 20 feet up the side of the dune and placed my 14mm wide angle lens close to the partially buried tree to make it a dominant foreground element. My settings were 1/640, f/16, and 400 ISO. Note I used a small aperture even though my lens was very wide because this guaranteed complete depth of field. The closer you get to the foreground, the more depth of field you lose in the background. In this composition, I focused on the tree.
