One of the most beautiful North American cats is the Canada lynx. In winter, its luxurious coat makes it look twice the size it appears in summer. This particular morning was a challenge because of the lighting. Shooting in the early morning was the correct thing to do, but dappled light in a forest isn't ideal. Here, you can see the birch trees being illuminated by the sunlight yet the lynx's face was in shadow. In post-processing, I had to lighten the shadows and minimize the highlights in Adobe Camera Raw to make this work. This is the biggest reason to shoot RAW files instead of jpgs -- so you can manipulate contrast. It also helps that the birch trunks block most of the shadows in the background. My settings were 1/1250, f/8, and 320 ISO. I used a 200mm focal length for the shot, and it was handheld.
