In my Carnival in Venice photo workshop I do every year, I set up a bedroom shoot in our hotel with one of the costumed models. It is an interesting challenge because of the lighting and the contrast. For example, if you expose for the shadows in this shot the highlights seen through the white window curtains will overexpose and all of the texture and detail of the fabric will disappear. Sometimes that works, but usually it doesn't. Therefore, I made a 3-frame HDR composite. I wanted to retain the mood of the room, and therefore I kept the dark shadows. At the same time, though, it was important to me to not allow the daylight coming in through the window to eclipse the subject. That's where the HDR came in -- to hold back those highlights.
