I sure hope dogs have a sense of humor! If not, it would really be a shame. This little pooch was being so patient during Carnaval in Venice, and I wondered if he knew how funny and adorable he looked. I used an f/11 lens aperture to make sure the plane of the dog’s face and the plane of the mask of his mistress were both in focus. When using a telephoto lens, it’s very important to notice details like this. With two subjects, it’s vital to make sure both of them are sharp. Some photographers think it's 'artsy' to have one subject sharp and the other soft. I strongly disagree. The out of focus subject, to me, is extremely distracting. The shutter speed of 1/100 was a little bit too slow in retrospect, but it worked out. My ISO was 640, and I used 105 mm focal length for the shot. My next Carnival in Venice workshop is this coming February.
